It seems buyers of the new Volvo XC90 are happy to pay for the range-topping versions, with three quarters ordering the Inscription trim.
It’s just a few days since we revealed that Volvo already has 57,000 orders for the new XC90 – and is reporting strong sales figures for the first six months of 2015 – and now we learn that buyers of the XC90 are happy to fork out for the best.It seems that three quarters of Volvo’s XC90 sales are for the range-topping Inscription trim which includes luxury extras like soft Nappa leather, electric seats up front, 12.3″ TFT screen, leather instrument panel, 20″ alloys and theatre lighting.
Prices for the XC90 Inscription start at £50,185 for the D5 (£53,740 for the T6 and £63,705 for the T8), but the pricing structure for the new XC90 – with the lowest-spec Momentum model costing just £5k less – perhaps has a lot to do with buyers choosing the range-topper.
Alain Visser, Volvo’s Marketing Director, said:
With 76 per cent of customers choosing the top end Inscription model, it is fair to say that we have now entrenched our position as a premium car maker.
It’s a fair comment, and one that should help Volvo not only sell cars, but also improve their margins from a mainstream 2.2 per cent to margins more in line with ‘Premium’ car makers (BMW’s margins are nearly 9 per cent).
