Citroen E-MEHARI Electric Buggy revealed
The Citroen E-MEHARI has been revealed by Citroen as a utilitarian buggy with a plastic body and hose-down interior. Goes on sale in France in 2016.
The Citroen C4 Cactus M Concept turned up at Frankfurt this year, drawing inspiration from Citroen’s 2CV-based Mehari, and now it arrives in production guise as the Citroen E-Mehari.The new E-Mehari is a pure electric buggy of a car, with a 30kWh Lithium Metal Polymer battery pack – said to be immune to weather conditions – offering a range of up to 124 miles from an eight hour charge (or 13 hours on a domestic supply) and can, if pushed, almost get to 70mph.
The E-Mehari gets an open-body style with plastic panels for the body, a folding soft-top, the option of some ‘in yer face’ paint jobs and can be hosed-down – inside and out – to clean off the debris from your adventures.
Citroen clearly see the E-Mehari as a second or third car, or a car hotels can offer to guests to runaround in when on holiday, with no real pretensions of being a proper family runaround. But its funky faux SUV styling and Cactus-like quirky looks will endear it to many, especially if Citroen are bold enough to make it as cheap as chips.
Citroen will be building the E-Mehari in Rennes – with a public debut scheduled in Paris later this month – with a launch in spring 2016, but it looks like there are no plans to bring it to the UK.
