The 2016 Jaguar XF is getting an all-wheel drive option – but only on the 178bhp Ingenium diesel – as Jaguar extend their 4WD options. Costs from £36,350.
The latest Jaguar XF arrived in the UK last summer, and it’s still a highly appealing car, especially if you want a premium car that’s not German. But the competition for the XF just keeps on improving, and cars like the new Mercedes E-Class and new Volvo S90 aren’t going to make things tougher still in an already competitive sector.
The only way to combat that is to continue evolving the XF and offering buyers what they want, and a step in that direction is the arrival of an all-wheel drive option for the XF.
The 2016 Jaguar XF AWD is now available in the UK, offering the appeal and grip of 4WD to those who want it, although it’s only available – at least for now – on the 2.0 litre 178bhp Ingenium engined XF.
The AWD setup in the XF is the same as Jaguar already use in cars like the F-Type AWD, which delivers all the torque to the back in normal driving, but which can shift torque to the front when it senses a loss of grip, whether that’s because the road’s slippery or you’re playing.
The price to pay for AWD – apart from the starting price of £36,350 – is performance that’s a bit blunted at 0-62mph in 8.7 seconds, extra weight and official economy that reduces to 57.7mpg.
But if you want the assurance of 4WD, it’s a sensible addition to the XF range to extend its appeal.
