The Volkswagen T-Cross Breeze Concept arrives in Geneva as VW start to deliver the promise of a new Polo-size Crossover/SUV future model.
We knew VW were planning to take a new, small SUV concept to the Geneva Motor Show, and it looked like it would be called the T-Cross. But we hadn’t actually envisaged it wouldn’t have a roof – step forward the Volkswagen T-Cross Breeze Concept .As VW take a leaf out of Land Rover’s book, the T-Cross Breeze Concept arrives as something we once thought was a non-existent market – the convertible SUV – until the Range Rover Evoque Convertible arrived and buyers queued up to grab one.
Previewing a future Polo-sized crossover/SUV, the T-Cross comes as a convertible – no doubt to grab a few headlines – but the production version, which will probably arrive by 2018, will certainly come with a tin-top, even if VW are bold enough to offer a drop-top version.
The T-Cross has a longer wheelbase (90mm) than the Polo we assume it’s based on, and it’s wider than the Golf so it looks purposeful thanks not just to its dimensions, but to the wide grill, slim lights, clean surfacing and big wheels.
Inside is a clue to the future of VW’s interior design too, with lots of connectivity, digital displays, touch sensitive surfaces and a 3ooW Beats sound system.
Under the bonnet there’s VW’s 1.0 litre three-cylinder petrol engine (no dirty VW diesel here) delivering 109bhp through a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox to the front wheels.
Expect the T-Cross to go in to production in the next two years, and sit alongside a production version of the Golf-Sized T-Roc as VW’s entry-level SUVs, complete with new names (which will almost certainly start with a ‘T’).
