The 2017 Volkswagen Amarok pick-up (pictured) gets a new look and a new engine
The VW Amarok Pick-Up gets a facelift for 2017, as well as a new 3.0 litre V6 diesel engine with up to 221bhp and a choice of FWD and 4WD.
Volkswagen teased a facelift for the Amarok Pick-Up last month, but now they’ve got round to revealing the update, and it bucks the trend in the motor industry for down-sizing engines in the quest for lower emissions b y dumping the 2.0 litre TDI and instead offering a new 3.0 litre V6 diesel. Of which we approve. The new 3.0 litre diesel comes with a choice of 161bhp, 201bhp and 221bhp power outputs – and has up to 405lb/ft of torque – so a big improvement in usability is on offer.
Drivetrain options are front-wheel drive for the entry-level models, but a choice of either selectable four-wheel drive or VW’s 4MOTION – which comes with an eight-speed automatic gearbox – when you’re happy to spend more.
The Amarok also gets meatier brakes to go with the additional power and increased towing capacity (now 3500kg), with 17″ discs at the front and 16″ at the back, with Automatic Post-Collision Braking System included as standard.
VW has given the Amarok a bit of a cosmetic makeover as well as the new diesel engine, with a blingy chrome grill, a tweaked front bumper, new alloys and dark tinted tail lamps, and there are new options for hardtops, butch bars and load covers too.
Apparently, the interior is also titivated with a revised dash and improved seats, but it seems VW has managed to do that yet so there are no photos.
The VW Amarok Aventura will be the launch model at the end of 2016, and it will come with 20″ alloys, body coloured sports bar, Park Distance Control, rear-view camera, xenons, LED running lights and LED illuminated side sills.
The Amarok needs to up its game to compete with the new Navara challenging, as well as offerings to come from Mercedes, Toyota and more.
The new VW Amarok will be on sale at VW’s UK dealers in September, with first customer deliveries expected by the end of the year.
