The VW Golf GTI Clubsport S is a hardcore, two-seat Golf that’s just broken the Nurburgring FWD record. Just 150 coming to the UK.
This is the Volkswagen Golf GTi Clubsport S, a hardcore, stripped-out, two-seat take on VW’s iconic Golf that’s just broken the Nurburgring lap record for a front-wheel drive production car and will be arriving in the UK later this year. The Golf GTI Clubsport S has its 2.0 litre turbo engine tweaked to deliver 306bhp and 280lb/ft of torque, delivers its power to the front wheels through a six-speed manual gearbox and can get to 62mph in 5.8 seconds.
Volkswagen has dumped the back seats in the Clubsport S, fitted a smaller battery, not bothered with much sound insulation and removed the parcel shelf and floor mats to cut weight to 1280kg in an effort to make the car as light as possible, resulting in the new FWD production car record of 07:49.21 at the Nurburgring.
VW has also fitted the Clubsport S with a ‘Nurburgring’ chassis setting (James May will be so pleased) for its dynamic chassis control system which sets the car up with revised suspension and steering profiles.
The Clubsport S pays homage to the original Mk 1 GTI with a choice of Red, white or Black paint jobs, and is fitted with 19″ alloys, front diff lock, XDS+, new exhaust, Clubsport bumpers, Alcantara trim, racing seats and a numbered plaque in the cabin.
VW are planning to build just 400 Gold GTI Clubsport S models, or which 150 are coming to the UK, 100 to Germany and the rest spread around other markets.
The car will go on sale later in 2016, and although VW hasn’t announced a price, somewhere around £35k seems about right.
