Hyundai’s ‘Triple Powertrain’ Ioniq goes on sale in the UK with the Ioniq Electric and Ioniq Hybrid now available at Hyundai’s UK dealers.
The new Hyundai Ioniq is Hyundai’s pitch for the hearts and minds of families looking to move away from ICE cars, with a mild hybrid powertrain for the tentative, a plug-in hybrid for the sane and a BEV for the intrepid.Nearly three months on from revealing UK prices and specs for the Ioniq, two versions have now gone on sale in the UK – the Ioniq BEV and Ioniq Hybrid – at prices starting at £19,995 for the Hybrid and £24,495 for the BEV (after taxpayer bribe). Unfortunately, you’ll have to wait until next year for the sane option.
Whichever of the categories of buyer you fit, the looks are much the same, with the Ioniq offering a relatively normal style, rather than a ‘Green’ flight of fancy, that will appeal to family buyers, although the slab of grey plastic on the BEV where the grille should be looks a bit unpleasant.
Specifications also look good, with connectivity and safety stuff featuring large, less weight to carry than an i30 (although not the BEV), more boot space than the Prius and stuff like alloys, DAB, Bluetooth, Cruise, Rear View Camera, Emergency Braking and Lane Keep Assist standard across the range.
Tony Whitehorn, Hyundai UK CEO, said:
This is a landmark launch for Hyundai. Not only is the all-new IONIQ the world’s first car to offer three electrified powertrains, but it’s also our first move into the electrified sector in Europe.
We have listened to our customers and we have responded with a full portfolio of electrified models, making low- to zero-emission mobility more accessible to more people.
The Hyundai Ioniq actually went on sale last Thursday (27 October) at Hyundai’s UK dealers, although the Ioniq BEV is only available at 27 selected dealers for now.
We’ll let you know what we think when Hyundai send us an Ioniq. But if you’re a business buyer the Ioniq plug-in may be the one to wait for.
