Alfa Romeo Stelvio SUV to be joined by two new Alfa SUVs
The Alfa Romeo Stelvio SUV will be joined by two new SUV in the next two years – one larger, one smaller – FCA CEO Sergio Marchionne has confirmed.
An Alfa Romeo SUV would have been unthinkable not very long ago, But Alfa has finally realised that they need to build cars buyers want, or go bust, so we’ve got the new Alfa Romeo Stelvio SUV.We haven’t driven a Stelvio yet, but it does promise to be among the most dynamic of SUVs, more in the mould of a Macan than and Evoque. In fact, Alfa are so convinced of the dynamism the Stelvio brings that they see no point in bothering with a Giulia Estate.
Although it’s too soon to declare the Stelvio a big success, Alfa are so convinced their new SUV is a winner that they are planning to deliver two more SUVs in the next two years, one of which will sit below the Stelvio, and one above.
Automotive News is reporting an article in the Italian Daily Corriere della Sera, which quotes Sergio Marchionne speaking at a private event for Alfa’s Instagram groupies confirming the two new SUVs and that they will be built in Turin and arrive by late 2018 or early 2019.
Marchionne gave no details beyond that on the new SUVs, but we’ve long expected Alfa to take the underpinnings of the Maserati Levante to create a halo SUV, and Marchionne’s comments would support that as we can’t see where else it would come from.
The Alfa SUV to sit below the Stelvio is a bit more tricky, as the only place it could sensibly come from within Alfa is if it’s based on a new Giulietta platform. Or, perhaps more likely, a re-skinned Fiat 500X / Jeep Renegade.
SIVs at the heart of Alfa’s sales. Who’d have thought it?
