Peel P50 up for auction – will it beat the £135,000 paid for a P50 last year?

A 1964 Peel P50 – the world’s smallest ever car – is going up for auction next week at R M Sotheby’s Monterey sale. Will it beat last year’s £135,000?

Most of the world had never heard of the Peel P50 – a 1960s micro car built on the Isle of Man – until Jeremy Clarkson drove one round the BBC building in a Top Gear episode a few years ago.

But since then, the world – or at least the classic car collectors world – seem to have fallen for the little Peel P50 in a big way.

Last year, at R M Sotheby’s Monterey sale, a Peel P50 sold for an incredible £135,000, and now RM are adding another P50 to their Monetary sale next week.

We’ve already revealed the ‘Sporty’ P50 – the Peel Trident – will go under the hammer next week, and now there’s another P50 to add to that too, with a white 1964 model also crossing the auction block.

It seems RM aren’t as bullish about this P50, and despite selling one last year for £135k this P50 is estimated at £60-90k. But that’s still an awful lot of money for so little.

This P50 is a white one – originally yellow – with four previous owners, and with the current owner for the last three years. It comes with a file of rare factory literature and has been the subject of restoration since the current owner acquired it.

This Peel P50 will cross the auction block on 17 August at R M Sotheby’s Monterey sale.
