Koenigsegg Agera RS 5.5s quicker to 249mph and back than a Bugatti Chiron (video)

The Koenigsegg Agera RS has set a new world record for accelerating to 400kph (249mph) and back to zero, beating the Bugatti Chiron by 5.5 seconds.

It’s more than two years since the Koenigsegg Agera RS arrived to supplant the Agera R and S and in the process deliver a car Christian von Koenigsegg believed would better anything made by any other hypercar maker.

The Agera RS is an awesome car by any measure, never mind one made five men in a shed in Sweden, with its 5.0 litre twin turbo V8 delivering an incredible 1360bhp in a car weighing a modest 1395kg.

But until now there has been no actual record breaking by the Agera RS, but with a customer wanting Koenigsegg to prove to other car makers what the RS could do, Koenigsegg took his car on a record breaking run at the Vandel Airfield in Denmark.

In the hands of factory driver Niklas Lilja, the RS took just 1,958 metres to hit 400kph (249mph) and another 9.56 seconds and 482 metres to come to a standstill for a total run time of 36.44 seconds over 2,441 metres. Astonishing.

The time beats the record set by the Bugatti Chiron – with the might and money of VW behind it – by 5.5 seconds.

Of course, this isn’t the first time Koenigsegg has set world records with its cars.

Back in 2001 the Agera R set a whole raft of new speed records, including 0-300-0 km/h (0-186-0 mph) in a frankly ridiculous 21.9 seconds.

We’re sure the Agera RS’ speed records won’t be the last from Koenigsegg.
