Gordon Murray TEASES ‘McLaren F1-Inspired’ Sports Car
Gordon Murray is launching a new car company, and to tease its possibilities has released an image of its first sports car, inspired by McLaren F1 principles.
Gordon Murray will forever be known as the man who designed the McLaren F1, but if everything goes as Murray hopes that achievement could be eclipsed by his new car company, and his new manufacturing process. This week saw an exhibition at Murray’s new facility at Dunsfold celebrate all Murray has achieved, but it also saw Murray reveal the first look at a new IGM (Ian Gordon Murray) car.
Using a superlight version of his i-Stream manufacturing process, Murray plans to build the small sports car using the same principles so vital to the success of the McLaren F1 – advanced aerodynamics, low weight, attention to detail and the latest technology.
To that end, Gordon Murray Automotive has moved Murray’s iStream process forward and is using aluminium sandwiched with recycled carbon fibre to deliver high strength and low weight.
The IGM design looks almost like a modern take on the F! with its roof mounted air scoop, but it’s thought it will be closer in size to a Smart Roadster than a McLaren F1, and get power from a naturally aspirated, mid-engine lump which will almost certainly be under 1.5 litres.
There’s no timeframe for delivering the new IGM car, and even when it’s ready it will be available in small numbers, acting as a showcase for the iStream technology Murray will sell to other car makers.
