BMW manage to sell 100,000 ELECTRIC Cars in 2017 – and light up the Four-Cylinder Building as a battery
BMW has sold over 100,000 electrified cars in 2017, achieving its target and increasing sales of of cars with electric assistance by more than 60 per cent.
BMW looked to be heading in to a bright new electric car future when it launched the i8 and i3 back in 2013, but it’s not been exactly world domination for the Bavarian Battery. But with the tipping point for electric cars either here or very close, the sales of electrified cars – and the will to push from BMW – has seen the Bavarians hit 100,000 ‘electric’ car sales in 2017.
That’s not 100k BEVs, put 100k cars with batteries under the skin, so it includes stuff like the 2 Series Active Tourer Plug-in Hybrid. But the 100k total does give BMW a 10 per cent global share of the electric market.
But this is just the start for electrified BMWs and their current nine electrified models, with strong plans going forward to make electric a major part of the mix.
With trademarks in place for BMW i1 to i9 and iX1 to iX9 the bases are clearly laid for a plethora of electric cars to come, and it’s already clear what the timeline is.
We’ve already seem the i8 Roadster, and in 2019 the MINI EV will arrive on sale followed by an electric version of the BMW X3 in 2020 and a flagship BMW iNEXT in 2021. By 2025 there will be 25 electrified BMW models.
So we can expect sales of electrified BMWs to rise significantly in the coming years, but for now BMW are celebrating their 100k sales by turning the ‘BMW Four-Cylinder’ building in to a big glowing battery (above).
