1954 Jaguar D-Type Works OKV 2 up for auction
A 1954 Jaguar D-Type Works – the legendary ‘OKV 2’ and driven by Stirling Moss – is expected to break the £10 million barrier when it goes under the hammer at R M Sotheby’s Arizona auction.
Update: Despite high expectations, this almost unique 1954 Jaguar D-Type Works failed to reach its reserve, with bidding topping out at $9.8 millionBefore the Jaguar E-Type stunned the world in the early 1960s, Jaguar had already built a car that stunned not just in the way it looked, but with what it could do too – the Jaguar D-Type.
Built to follow on from the successful C-Type, the D-Type came with a monocoque construction and all-wheel disc brakes and went on to win Le Mans in 1955, 1956 and 1957.
Now, one of the first of the three Jaguar Works D-Types – the legendary ‘OKV 2’ – is going under the hammer at RM Sotheby’s Arizona auction and should fetch more than £10,000,000.
Known as ‘OKV 2’ from its road registration number, this D-Type was handed to Stirling Moss, but in 1954 all three new works D-Types failed to finish at Le Mans after an issue with contaminated fuel.
Finished in British Racing Green, OKV 2 comes with a spare engine, a massive race and test pedigree including 55 race wins, 24 podiums and, as the D-Type Workhorse, has been driven by 16 of Jaguar’s most renowned drivers of the period including Stirling Moss, Peter Walker, Mike Hawthorn, Duncan Hamilton, Ken Wharton, Bob Berry, Desmond Titterington, Don Beauman, Peter Blond, Norman Dewis and Ninian Sanderson.
If you have very deep pockets and a love for legendary Jaguars, this is a car not to miss. But you’ll have to set up phone bidding or go to Arizona as RM won’t be taking internet bids on this car.
The 1954 Jaguar D-Type OKV 2 will go under the hammer on 18-19 January 2018 in Arizona.
