Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV hits 100k European sales – 1/3rd in the UK

The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV has passed the 100,000 sales milestone in Europe since its launch, with more than 34,000 of those sold in the UK.

The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV has been a big success for Mitsubishi, and that continues as they reveal their plug-in hybrid has now passed 100,000 sales in Europe.

The Outlander PHEV racked up 100,000 sales worldwide by 2016, but it’s now passed that significant milestone in Europe alone, and the UK is a big part of the PHEV’s success.

With tax breaks for plug-in hybrids still a great reason for businesses to buy in the UK, the PHEV has sold more than 34,000, more than a third of total European sales, since it launched, with Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and Germany lagging behind.

Much of that is because Mitsubishi has been very clever about the way they have marketed the PHEV.

Rather than pitch the plug-in hybrid as a range-topping model, Mitsubishi cleverly brought it to market at the same price as the Outlander diesel, and even when the government grant was cut 2016 Mitsubishi came up with an offer to keep its price unchanged.

Although you’ll never get the official daft economy numbers, the PHEV can be very economical to run if you can make proper daily use of its around 20 plus mile real world EV range, and the updates Mitsubishi wrought to the Outlander PHEV for 2017 have made it a much better car too.

It’s going to be tough for Mitsubishi to keep the Outlander PHEV’s success going as more and more competitors start to hit the market, but they’ve proved there’s a proper appetite for AFVs. Which is great.
