New Toyota Corolla production begins in the UK
The new Toyota Corolla Hatch and Estate – Toyota’s replacement for the Auris – starts UK production this week.
After being missing in action and replaced by the Auris, the new Toyota Corolla is back and promising to be a better car than the Auris ever was.On offer in the UK in Hatch and Touring Sports (Estate) versions, the new Corolla sees an end to the diesel-engines versions available in the Auris, with just a single petrol ICE option on offer, but the choice of two hybrid powertrains as Toyota continues to charge on with its ‘self-charging’ hybrids.
That means the familiar 1.8 litre Atkinson lump with 120bhp , but a more interesting 2.0 litre hybrid too boasting a more appealing 178bhp (although availability is trim dependent).
Now, two months after Toyota Corolla prices and specs for the UK were announced, Toyota has started building the new Corolla at their plant in Burnaston, Derbyshire, the European production centre for the new Corolla.
Marvin Cooke, TMUK MD, said:
This is a proud day for everyone at TMUK, making the new TNGA Corolla is a major milestone in our production history.
This is a real sign of confidence in the capabilities of our workforce and in TMUK as a centre for world-class manufacturing. We will continue to deliver the highest level of quality products to our customers.
The new Toyota Corolla models become commercially available in the UK next month, with the Toyota Corolla Saloon to join in later and, quite possibly, a Toyota Corolla Cross too.
