The Jaguar I-Pace is not susceptible to relay theft
A report from Which? analysing data from ADAC shows the only cars with keyless entry and start not susceptible to relay theft are from Jaguar Land Rover.
After years of falling car thefts, numbers are now on the rise as more and more car makers fit keyless technology to their cars, technology which is open to relay theft.Using cheap scanners easily available online, thieves can use a simple device to capture signals from a keyless fob in a house, relay it to an accomplice by the car and gain access as well as start the car. And it’s gone – in seconds.
Of the top five cars on sale in the UK – Ford Fiesta, Volkswagen Golf, Nissan Qashqai, Ford Focus and Vauxhall Cora – only the Corsa is not susceptible. But that’s only because you can’t have keyless on a Corsa.
The information comes from a report by Which? which has analysed data from Germany’s ADAC, which has been busy testing keyless cars for security, taking 237 cars and discovering that only three cars fitted with the technology weren’t vulnerable.
Of those 237, from more than 30 car makers, 230 could be opened and started, four could either be unlocked or started and just three cars stayed secure. What were the secure cars? The new Land Rover Discovery, latest Range Rover, and the Jaguar i-Pace.
Hats off to JLR.
