The Range Rover now comes with JLR’s new straight-six petrol
The Range Rover can now be had with JLR’s new straight-six 3.0 litre Ingenium petrol engine complete with mild hybrid help.
A couple of months ago we got the first look at JLR’s straight-six Ingenium engine as it got fitted to the limited edition Range Rover Sport HST, as JLR finally got their extended four-pot Ingenium engines in to a production model after three years of expectation. Now it’s the turn of the full-fat Range Rover to be treated to the new straight-six, and it could become the engine of choice for the big Rangie as long as you can live without the diesel’s torque (although it’s got a chunk more than the V6 S/C petrol).
The 3.0 litre in-line six is good for 394bhp and 405lb/ft of torque, enough to send the behemoth to 62mph in a respectable 6.3 seconds and on to 140mph, and thanks to a Mild Hybrid setup it gets official economy of 30.4mpg. Which means it should do low 20s in the real world – much like the V8 diesel.
Nick Rogers, Director of Product Engineering, said:
Traditional Range Rover strengths have been heightened with the introduction of the latest 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine. Advanced technologies, such as Continuous Variable Valve Lift, work alongside a mild-hybrid system that harvests energy as you drive, to improve fuel efficiency and lower emissions.
The otherwise wasted energy is used to power the electric supercharger, which enhances vehicle capability by enhancing the torque curve at low engine speeds for greater responses. Superior comfort is achieved thanks to the natural mass balance of the engine, which allows it to run more smoothly.
The new six-pot Range Rover also gets a few titivations, including Sign Post Dimming which switches of individual LEDs in the headlights to stop road signs reflecting back, and Tourist Mode for the headlights which lets you switch instantly between driving on the right or left. And, finally, the Range Rover gets Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
The updated Range Rover is now on sale at Land Rover’s UK dealers.
