The Volkswagen T-Roc Cabriolet is revealed ahead of a debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show as VW fills a niche for a drop-top SUV we didn’t know existed.

Convertible SUVs are not exactly thick on the ground, and there’s probably a reason for that – buyers don’t want them.

The Nissan Murano Convertible didn’t set the world on fire, and nor did the Range Rover Evoque Convertible. But that’s not stopping VW chopping the top off the T-Roc, just as we reported eighteen months ago.

Say hello to the Volkswagen T-Roc Cabriolet, heading for a debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show next month and, if VW has their way, proliferating on the road by next spring.

VW say the T-Roc Cabriolet is the first crossover cabriolet in the compact class, and follows in the footsteps of the Beetle and Golf Cabrios, with a classic soft top which opens and closes in just nine seconds at up to 18mph.

Accommodating the folding roof means losing the back doors and making the back seats narrower to house the roof gubbins, along with a couple of RSJs to keep the thing intact, all of which adds up to a T-Roc new from the windscreen back, weighing a chunk more and growing a bit in size too. Oh. and the boot’s now more of a cupboard.

It looks like the T-Roc Cabriolet is heading for the UK as an entry-level model based on the regular T-Roc Design trim, and as an R-Line model too with ‘sporty’ bits, with a choice of 1.0 litre three-pot or 1.5 litre four-pot petrol engines.

VW say the T-Roc Cabriolet will arrive in time for next spring’s sunny weather.
