All future Maseratis will have Hybrid or EV powertrains
Maserati has declared it is going electric, with all future Maserati models getting either a hybrid or electric powertrain option.
Maserati isn’t exactly a runaway success at the moment, but FCA has decided it has a real future, and the real future is electrification. Which, of course, we’ve heard before. But Maserati has now confirmed that its entire range going forward will be electrified, with hybrid and battery electric models, and is turning its plant in Italy to an electric car centre of excellence, confirming the plan is to build all future electrified models on home turf.
It might seem like and obvious sweeping generalisation for Maserati to declare it’s going electric, but plans do seem to be in place to get on with the transition, with the first electrified Maserati expected next year.
That is likely to be a hybrid version of the Maserati Ghibli, but that will be closely followed by a production version of the Maserati Alfieri Concept – which we first saw five years ago – which will be a hybrid, and offered as a coupe and cabriolet, and could be the first Maserati BEV.
Following the hybrid Ghibli and production Alfieri will be a compact SUV, and it’s expected to be an electric SUV aimed at the Porsche Macan, with the Granturismo coupe and GranCabrio convertible becoming EVs by 2021 too.
Will the move to electrification be enough to get Maserati on track for the future?
