New Polestar 2 Launch Edition costs £49,900 – and ‘Previews’ the new electric Volvo XC40 tech

The new Polestar 2 Launch Edition EV will cost £49,900 according to information on Polestar’s configurator. Arriving in the UK mid-2020.

We’ve had the reveal of the Polestar 2 – the first proper electric car from Volvo’s standalone Polestar brand – but all we’ve had until now is a price guide.

But Polestar has managed to publish prices on their configurator for the Polestar 2, confirming that the range-topping Launch Edition will cost £49,900 in the UK.

That’s not exactly bargain basement, although there will be more Polestar 2 options heading to market to follow the Launch Edition, including a lower-powered version from around £35k and a long distance version too.

But it’s the Polestar 2 Launch Edition which will arrive first, and it comes with Ohlins dampers, 20″ alloys and Brembos and will be available for the first year of production.

As we know, what’s underpinning the Polestar 2 is much the same as what will underpin the new electric Volvo XC40, although whether the XC40 will be offered with the same top-end powertrain as the Polestar 2 Launch Edition remains to be seen.

That top end powertrain comprises a 78kWh battery, which will certainly reach the XC40 EV, powering a pair of electric motors for a combined output of 402bhp and 487lb/ft of torque, good for 0-62mph in 4.7 seconds and probably feeling even quicker thanks to the lump of instant torque. It also has a WLTP range of 310 miles.
