Volkswagen XL1 HYBRID heads for auction
A 2015 Volkswagen XL1 – VW’s ‘Super’ Hybrid model – is hitting the auction block this month and is expected to fetch around £100k.
Back in 2011, Volkswagen revealed the XL1 Super Efficient Vehicle (SEV) at the Qatar Motor Show as a concept to showcase how they would tackle the future with lightweight cars with hybrid powertrains. At the time, we said it was no more likely to go in to production than a McLaren F1 car, but just to spite us (we’re sure) VW decided they would put the XL1 in to production, albeit in very limited numbers (just 200 worldwide) and at a silly price tag – £98,515.
For your £100k you got a car that looked like a cartoon version of a future transport pod, with its tiny 800cc diesel engine and 27bhp electric motor promising to give you 313mpg. But we’re not entirely sure VW actually flogged the 200 cars they’d decided to build.
Back in October we reported on an XL1 for sale through Silverstone auctions (which ended up going for £103k) which didn’t look to have ever left VW (or at least VW’s UK network), and now Silverstone has another XL1 up for grabs at this month’s auction.
This is a Clearwater Blue XL1 with just 312 miles on the clock, boasting the reg number VW15 XLL and estimated at £85-100k. Is it another car from VW? It could easily be.
