The rumour mill ahead of the Geneva Motor Show says Audi will unveil their third e-tron concept. This time the Audi A1 e-tron. Which makes real sense.
The Geneva Motor Show – which in case you’ve been living as a hermit in a cave for the last few weeks – starts tomorrow for press and on Thursday for the public. And one of the big deals is the final public reveal of the endlessly teased Audi A1, Audi’s answer to BMW’s MINI.
The endless teases on the A1 did become a bit much, but Audi certainly succeeded in getting the A1 under people’s noses ahead of the actual reveal. They even managed to court a little controversy by stating that the “…Audi A1 is the only premium car in its sector”. Which, whether they actually believe it or not, did get a few headlines in the motoring press.
So with all the tease, torment and leaks that have surrounded the drawn-out launch of the Audi A1, we really shouldn’t be at all surprised that the latest rumour to come out of Audi – via the French web site Le Buzz Auto – is that the surprise Audi is threatening for Geneva will be the third Audi e-tron concept – this one based on the A1.
The Audi A1 e-tron is probably the most sensible thing Audi could do. It’s all very well conceiving the Audi R8 e-tron and its smaller sibling – dubbed the Audi R4 e-tron – but in the real world they will never be a substitute for a real car with a proper engine. But where electric cars are a success is in inner-city and congested urban areas where they shift the pollution (Nox and particulates) away from the local area and have tax benefits for owners with their zero (at the point of use) CO2 emissions.
Not only does the A1 e-tron make a huge amount of sense for Audi, it will actually give them something new on the A1 to release at the show. And give Jason Timberlake – who Audi are bringing along to unveil the A1 – an extra bit of coverage.
But it’s just a rumour. Until tomorrow.
