The BMW Concept 8 Series has been officially revealed at the 2017 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este in Italy, previewing a 2018 range-topping BMW 8 Series Coupe.
Yesterday we brought you the first photo of the new BMW Concept 8 Series – BMW’s bid to take on cars like the Mercedes S Class Coupe and Bentley Continental GT – and now it’s officially revealed at the 2017 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este in Italy. As we said yesterday, the new BMW 8 Series – for the concept is very close to what will be a new 8 Series range in 2018 – is an impressive, cohesive coupe, almost ostentatious to look at but managing to look expensive rather than extravagant.
It’s long drooping bonnet, stubby tail, very coupe roofline, laser lights, front lip, bulging haunches and statement kidney grille all conspire to deliver a car which makes the S Class Coupe look a little staid.
Inside, there’s a big stacked central console with a good size infotainment screen, sports seats, Marino leather and plenty of carbon fibre. And it looks production-ready.
Adrian van Hooydonk, Senior VP BMW Group Design, said:
It is a luxurious sports car which embodies both unadulterated dynamics and modern luxury like arguably no other. For me, it’s a slice of pure automotive fascination.
The design of the BMW Concept 8 Series provides a fresh interpretation of iconic BMW styling cues and it also showcases a new approach to the use of forms which is reflected particularly prominently in the car’s surfacing.
As this is supposedly just a design study, BMW are declining to give details about what powers it.
But it’s almost certain it will come initially with engines from the very top end of BMW’s range, although BMW’s trademarking of a variety of suitable monikers – 825, 830, 835, 845 and 850 – suggest the 8 Series range is going to come in a variety of guises.
Not only do there seem likely to be a range of engines, but it seems all but certain that the 8 Series Coupe will also spawn an 8 Series Gran Coupe and an 8 Series Convertible too. It also seems likely we’ll get a BMW M8 too.
Which should help BMW deliver on their promise that “The BMW 8 Series Coupe will bring together razor-sharp dynamics and modern luxury, and set new benchmarks in the luxury coupe segment”.
