BMW i5 joins the i3 and i8 in BMW’s ‘i’ range at Frankfurt
What’s expected to be the BMW ik5 is heading for a reveal at the Frankfurt Motor Show, joining BMW’s ‘i’ range which will grow to 12 BEVs by 2025.
The BMW i5 has supposed to have been on its way ever since we first saw the i3 and i8, but BMW took a step back from its ‘i’ plans, waiting, it seems, for technology to advance. But now the BMW i5 is heading for a reveal at the Frankfurt Motor Show next week – well, we assume it’ll be the i5 as BMW are saying it will sit between the i3 and i8 – previewing a production model which will arrive by 2021.
The BMW i5 will be a part of a growing electric range from BMW, which BMW’s Chairman, Harald Krüger (pictured above with a covered i5) says will grow to 25 models by 2025, of which 12 will be BEVs.
But it’s not just BMW’s i brand which is going electric, with the electric MINI arriving at Frankfurt, the electric BMW X3 confirmed for 2020 and electrified models at BMW M and Rolls Royce confirmed.
BMW are being a bit coy about what the i5 will offer, but it’s clear BMW are happy they’ve moved technology – or will have by the time the i5 launches – to the point where the i5 could offer range of over 400 miles.
Probably similar in design to the 5 Series GT (well, now the 6 Series GT), the new i5 will have room for five and their luggage, offer impressive performance and sit between the Tesla Model 3 and Model S in both size and price.
More, no doubt, will be revealed at Frankfurt.
