BMW X1 sDrive20d EfficientDynamics Edition revealed

BMW X1 sDrive20d EfficientDynamics - the 'Blue' X1 arrives

BMW will be launching the BMW X1 sDrive20d EfficientDynamics Edition in the Autumn, offering 52.3 mpg and 119g/km

The BMW X1 is, according to BMW, “…still the only premium vehicle in its segment” and they’re keen to make sure that their baby SUV keeps its nose ahead of the pack.

Which explains the plans to launch an X1 badged-up with the EfficientDynamics moniker in the Autumn – the BMW X1 sDrive20d EfficientDynamics Edition.

BMW anoraks know that BMW’s EfficientDynamics gubbins – stuff like stop-start and low rolling resistance tyres – have sneaked in across the BMW range over the last few years, improving economy and lowering emissions in the process.

But BMW only pin the EfficientDynamics badge to the super-eco version in a range; the car they want to have the big green halo (although, as BMW is German, that should perhaps be the big Blue Halo).

So this Autumn BMW will launch the X1 sDrive20d EfficientDynamics complete with 163 hp four-pot diesel with BMW TwinPower Turbo. That translates in to an X1 with just 119g/km Co2 and average fuel economy of 52.3mpg.

Just like the BMW 320d EfficientDynamics we reviewed last year, the X1 sDrive20d EfficientDynamics gets the clever flywheel with a pendulum that allows you to drive around in traffic on the edge of stalling with no vibrations. Does wonders for fuel economy and you’ll be astonished at how often you find yourself drifting around in traffic at 900rpm.

Other stuff to aid the eco-battle on the X1 ED includes a gear-shift indicator, brake energy regeneration, stop-start, low rolling resistance tyres, AirCon you can turn off properly and electromechanical power steering.

It all sounds awful for a Beemer, but it’s really not. If you’re grabbing an X1 as a shopping car come school-run special, the X1 EfficientDynamics is a the way to go and you really, yes really, won’t find all the ED gubbins a pain.

Honest, guv.

The X1 EfficientDynamics will be a good car? If it doesn’t arrive until later in 2011 you can’t have driven it yet. It could be awful!
