Citroen C4 Cactus to be killed off
The Citroen C4 Cactus is to be killed off by Citroen, following its ‘mainstream’ update in 2017, to be replaced by a non-Cactus Hatch.
Back in 2016, we reviewed the Citoen C4 Cactus, and we liked it a lot.We like it a lot not because it was a brilliant car, but because it dared to be different, delivering a properly quirky Citroen family car that stretched back in to the roots of Citroen’s gloriously mad creations.
With its big Air Bumps up the side, a cabin which really was pretty basic, and its no-fills lack of pretension, the C4 Cactus was appealing and different. And it sold quite well.
But last year Citroen seemed to have an attack of corporate panic that they had such a quirky car on sale, and the facelift they delivered took away most of the character that made the original C4 Cactus so appealing.
Out wen the big Air Bumps on the side, to be replaced with token efforts that were hardly visible, a slicker back end, more body colour and a slightly more refined cabin. It took away the C4 Cactus’ mojo.
Now, in a Top Gear interview with Citreon’s Xavier Peugeot (yes, really), he said:
So for the time being this car is our C-segment hatch offer. Our next C-segment car to come will replace the C4 Cactus. This will be the end of the Cactus. For the name, I don’t know yet, but for the car, yes.
But Xavier did go on to say that he wanted a polarising car to replace the Cactus, so perhaps Citroen will be bold enough to deliver a new car as quirky and different as the C4 Cactus was before they messed with it?
