Corgi James Bond Aston Martin DB5 back in production

January 11, 2015 By Cars UK

The Corgi James Bond Aston Martin DB5 – complete with ejector seat –  has gone back in to production to celebrate 50 years since it won Toy of the Year in 1965.

Perhaps the most iconic Aston Martin is the DB5 made famous by James Bond, and certainly the most famous toy car is the self-same Aston Martin DB5 from Corgi, complete with ejector seat, machine guns and bullet-proof screen.

For boys of a certain age, the Corgi DB5 is a misty memory of childhood, tinged with regret that they either don’t have it any longer or, if they do, that they didn’t look after theirs more carefully to cash in on the huge demand for original models in pristine condition.

But now, to celebrate 50 years since it won Toy of the Year in 1965, Corgi are re-issuing the Aston Martin DB5 – complete with all the working bits – to celebrate. So step forward all those middle-aged men who want a memory of childhood on their desks. You can have it in Gold or Silver for £19.99, but it’s already sold out on pre-order so you may have to wait awhile.

James May declares the Corgi Aston Martin DB5 the Most Important Car in History

In related Corgi Aston Martin DB5 news, James May has just declared the Corgi DB5 as the most important car in history at the London Classic Car.

James’ other choices – revealed before the show – where split in to Halls of Obviousness and The Chambers of Bloody-mindedness. They are:

Halls of Obviousness

1886 Benz Motorwagen
1908 Ford Model T
1938 Volkswagen Beetle
1959 Austin Mini
1964 Ford Mustang
1997 Toyota Prius?

The Chambers of Bloody-mindedness

1901 Waverley Electric
1906 Cadillac Model K
1933 Standard Superior
1972 Honda Civic
1980 Lada Riva
2009 Bruno ExoMars Rover

But, in James’ opinion, the car that tops them all is the Corgi Aston Martin DB5 – that sold a huge 6 million in its first year.

May Said:

The thing about the Corgi DB5 is that it was a great toy at the time. If you’ve got an iPod now you’ll probably think it’s rubbish, but at the time it was absolutely amazing.

Of course it is a personal and emotive choice and a lot of people will disagree with me. But that’s the point of this display. It’s about starting a debate rather than concluding one.

Maybe May has a new Toy series to promote?
