The David Brown Speedback GT (pictured) is getting a sibling as David Brown announces ‘Project 2’
David Brown Automotive has announced an as yet unnamed ‘Project 2’ to be revealed in the coming months to sit alongside the Speedback GT.
David Brown was always destined to create an Aston Martin-inspired bespoke car with a birth name the same as the ‘DB’ in Aston Martin, and the Speedback GT which arrived in 2014 was a very impressive effort.
But half a million pounds for what some would describe as a titivated Jaguar XK (the underpinnings for the Speedback GT) is a lot. But that’s to miss the point.
Where everyday cars, even cars like Aston Martins, are very much prêt-à-porter, a car like the David Brown Speedback GT is very much haute couture.
So you need to think of the donor Jaguar as the body within, and the Speedback GT the bespoke wrapping. And when you look at the work that goes in to creating such a bespoke creation, the £500k starts to look a bit of a bargain.
Clearly many others think the same, because David Brown Automotive is off to new 18,000 sq ft premises at Silverstone in May when it’s expected to announce more details of its next project, catchily dubbed ‘Project 2’ at this stage.
Oddly, we’ve not heard any whispers about exactly what Project 2 will be inspired by, nor what will underpin it, but we can’t see it being far away from the DB5 inspiration and the Jaguar underpinnings of the Speedback GT.
David Brown are promising to reveal three derivatives of the new model – describing it as an ‘Original Remastered’ – so it may be DB are going further back than the DB5 for this inspiration. Or not.
What the three derivatives will be is not being revealed, but it seems likely it will include a coupe and convertible, and maybe a fastback / Shooting Brake.
David Brown said of his eponymous company’s plans:
I am so proud to now be able to share the news of our new model.
We’ve been working on Project 2 for over a year, it’s an idea that I had right at the start of Speedback GT’s story and sits beautifully alongside it. Using our core mantra of classic styling, beautiful craftsmanship and modern technology, Project 2 is a fusion of the brand’s values, with quintessential British design and craftsmanship at the heart.
We’ve had a lot of fun with the new car and I can’t wait to reveal it in full.
The new David Brown car is expected to be revealed in May, with the first customer cars arriving as early as September.
