David Brown Speedback GT heading for the USA
The delicious David Brown Speedback GT – a modern recreation of a classic Grand Tourer – goes on sale in the USA with a price tag of $753,000. Debuts at Pebble Beach 2015.
It’s a little over a year since David Brown Automotive revealed their Speedback GT, a modern take on a classic Grand Tourer with a body and interior that evokes past greats – in particular Aston Martin – and perfect modern underpinnings from the potent and able Jaguar XKR.
Frankly, we were a little cynical that David Brown could create a car appealing enough to warrant a price tag of £500k (and that’s before you add VAT), and that the Speedback GT would probably be nothing more than a rich man’s folly and a pastiche of the past. But we were wrong.
In the flesh, the Speedback GT is seriously appealing, and the attention to detail remarkable. It’s not really a car that can be compared to the re-engineered E-Types Eagle produce, but in terms of appeal it’s up there. Yes, even at £600k when George has grabbed his vodka.
So with a successful launch – and many hearts and minds won over in the UK and Europe – David Brown is off to the Land of the Free with his Speedback GT, debuting it at Pebble Beach in August and pitching it at the same price as in the UK (which, at the moment, makes it £753,000 plus tax).
We’re pretty sure that the knowledgeable and well-heeled visitors at Pebble will soon get over the same prejudices we had about the Speedback GT, and instead embrace its real appeal. And place orders.
The only problem is, if the USA does fall in love with David Brown’s Speedback GT, how many Jaguar XKRs does David Brown have to play with?
