Henrik Fisker (pictured with his EMotion EV) says Solid State batteries will be ready by 2020
Henrik Fisker has revealed his plans for Solid State Electric Car batteries are now going to arrive as early as 2020, offering 450 mile range and very rapid charging.
The potential for Solid State batteries to revolutionise the way we perceive and use electric cars (and almost anything else with a battery) is something we’ve covered many times before as many car makers, and others, pile big money in to delivering solid state battery tech.Toyota says its solid state batteries will be ready in the early 2020s, James Dyson’s planned electric car is expected to deliver in a similar timeframe, and Henrik Fisker has promised much the same. Until now.
Now, in an interview with Inc.com, Henrik Fisker has revealed that progress on Solid State batteries has been much greater, and much quicker, than expected, and he now expects solid state batteries to be ready for commercial use in 2020. That’s just eighteen months way.
Fisker says the problems of current solid state battery tech – including low density and poor performance in low temperatures – have been solved by creating a three dimensional battery (Fisker are calling it the ‘Bolt’ battery) which gives a surface area 25 times the size of a thin film battery.
Fisker says that means his new Solid State batteries will offer a density 2.5 times that of current lithium ion batteries, will cost around a third as much and can be charged quickly. Very quickly.
Potentially, the new solid state batteries could deliver an 80 per cent charge in a minute, although Fisker seems to think a 250 mile splash and dash in five minutes is around the right level for production.
It looks like Fisker is still planning to launch the Emotion (pictured above with the man himself) in 2020, but whether they will come with solid state batteries to start with remains to be seen.
