The already limited run Ford GT has a new even more limited special edition in its midst – the Ford GT ’66 Heritage Edition – to celebrate the 2016 Le Mans success.
The only reason the Ford GT exists is because Ford ruled Le Mans in 1966 with the original GT 40, winning the gruelling race in a car driven by Bruce McLaren and Chris Amon and putting more obvious supercars firmly in the their place in the process.
Fast forward 50 years and the new Ford GT has had its own success at Le Mans this year with a class win, and to celebrate that – and Ford’s stunning 1966 win – Ford has delivered a very limited edition of the already very limited edition GT – the Ford GT ’66 Heritage Edition.
There’s nothing complicated about the GT ’66 Heritage, it’s simply the stunning new Ford GT with a livery that evokes the look of the 1966 Le Mans car.
The only colour is black – although you can have matt or gloss – with silver stripes, No.2 graphics (to denote the ’66 car) and a set of gold alloys.
The interior of the GT gets a similar treatment, with carbon fibre seats covered in black leather, gold accents and blue webbing for the seatbelts as another nod to the 1966 car.
Ford aren’t saying just how many ’66 Heritage Editions of the GT they’re making – and nor how much they’ll cost – but they will only be available in 2017 and only to the 250 buyers Ford has whittled down from the 7,000 applications they had to buy a GT.
So, unless you’re already one of the 250, you can’t have one.
