Hyundai HyperEconiq Ioniq Concept takes the Ioniq’s economy to the MAX
The Hyundai HyperEconiq Ioniq Concept is a concept car created by Hyundai and Bisimoto Engineering for SEMA taking Ioniq economy to extremes.
When you think of SEMA Concept Cars you usually think of barking mad looks and performance, not really about squeezing every last inch out of the fuel in the tank. But that hasn’t stopped Hyundai teaming up with Bisimoto Engineering to create the Hyundai HyperEconiq Ioniq Concept, an Ioniq Concept which aims to squeeze every last bit out of the fuel in the tank.
Every hypermiling trick in the book has been employed to make the Ioniq as economical as possible, although whether any of the lessons learnt in the process translate to future improvement to the production Ioniq remains to be seen.
The raft of changes to the concept include a Bisimoto pulse-chamber exhaust (for enhanced volumetric efficiency, apparently), Racepack OBD-monitoring electronics, low-friction PurOl Elite synthetic oil, high silica content low-rolling resistant tyres, aluminium brake calipers, Recaro Racing Seats and 19″ one-piece carbon fibre wheels.
Aerodynamic stuff comes in the form of an Aero Kit with front splitter, TA wing, side splitters and covers over the back wheels as well as coilover suspension to reduce the ride height.
Hyundai also say there are enhanced e-generators and NGK spark plugs (does that make a difference?) as well as ‘Optimized inertial supercharging during valvetrain overlap’. Whatever that is.
It all adds up to a tweaked and fettled Hyundai Ioniq which can do well over 80mpg.
Bisi Ezerioha, Bisimoto Engineering president, said:
The HyperEconiq Ioniq takes the Ioniq where we always knew it could go, without sacrificing drivability.
Leveraging the outstanding Ioniq electrified platform and powertrain, we’ve focused on a variety of technical elements to bring efficiency, aero and design to the highest level.
The Hyundai HyperEconiq Ioniq Concept will be on display at SEMA in Las Vegas later this month.
