Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid
The Hyundai Ioniq – a new car from Hyundai with a choice of battery, hybrid and plug-in powertrains – will debut at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show.
The Hyundai Ioniq is Hyundai’s big challenge to the domination of the Toyota Prius, offering a choice of three powertrains – BEV, Hybrid and Plug-in – and is slowly coming in to focus as Hyundai make a bit of a meal out of revealing exactly what the Ioniq will offer. We had a tease for the Ioniq (followed by another tease) and a few more details and a couple of photos just last week.
Now we get the next instalment of Hyundai’s roll-out of the Ioniq, complete with a set of photos and a bit more detail about what’s on offer, although so far Hyundai are only revealing what the Ioniq Hybrid has to offer, and nothing on the BEV or plug-in.
Due to debut in Europe at the Geneva Motor Show in March – before going on sale later in 2016, the Ioniq Hybrid is powered by a 1.6 GDI four-cylinder engine good for 105PS, and an electric motor adding another 43.5PS which is powered by a Lithium-Ion polymer battery located under the back seats.
The power from the ICE and Electric Motor goes through a new six-speed dual-clutch gearbox with a choice of Sport and ECO modes.
Aids to economy include a very aerodynamic shape which has front wheel air curtains, active air flap, rear spoiler and diffuser, closed wheel design and covered underbody, high-efficiency Climate Control and Sat Nav that predicts upcoming conditions to increase efficiency.
Hyundai are claiming the Ioniq will be a dynamic drive, thanks to the aforementioned DCT, aided by multi-link rear suspension and responsive steering.
There’s also plenty of technology on offer in the Ioniq, including Smart Cruise Control, Lane Departure Warning, Blind Spot Detection, Lane Change Assist and Autonomous Emergency Braking.
It’s a shame Hyundai aren’t yet revealing the pure electric or plug-in hybrid details, but the Ioniq does look to be stacking up to be serious competition for the Toyota Prius.
