The electric VW E-Golf now costs almost £3k less in the UK
Volkswagen has announced it’s cut the price of the electric E-Golf by almost £3k ahead of the debut of the new ID 3 electric cars.
As you can’t fail to have noticed, Volkswagen is intent on turning itself in to a maker of electric cars, taking a massive gamble that car buyers are ready to buy EVs in droves and eschew ICE cars. We’ve had endless teases for the ID 3 Hatch, a Golf-sized electric hatch, and it’s finally due to debut in a few days at the Frankfurt Motor Show, and at prices which are ‘affordable’.
But ‘affordable’ is relative, and although in EV terms a starting price for the ID 3 of around £25k is a decent one, it’s far from the ‘electric car for everyone’ VW claim, and is around £8k more than the entry-level Golf.
But that ‘low’ entry-level price does give VW a bit of a headache, as the current electric VW hatch – the E-Golf – costs more than £30k, even after government grant. But VW has a solution.
It’s announced that the E-Golf is going to be cheaper, slashing almost 10 per cent off the price, cutting it to £27,575 (after grant) with immediate effect.
Of course, this price cut is just a temporary measure, because the imminent arrival of the MK 8 Golf will put an end to the electric Golf (although there will probably be a plug-in hybrid) as VW centres its electric offerings around the ID 3 range.
So if you really want an electric Golf with a 144-mile range and 134bhp for £27.5k, rather than an ID 3 with a 200-350 mile range for £25k, then you better get a shake on.
And what if you’ve just paid over £30k for an electric Golf? Tough.

VW have stated never stated that the ID.3 will be around £25k, so you
consider yourself a journalist or a pedler of fake news!

VW has stated the ID3 will cost from under under €30k. Which, dependent on the state of the Pound, is £25-27k. No fake news.

No. Volkswagon HAS to get out of diesel cars because they have now been found out to be “fixing” the Dieselgate issues with tricky software that turns off the emission controls if the car is not between 14c and 20c and South Korea has now banned them from selling there.
