A McLaren F1 GTR Longtail, one of just 10 GTR Longtails built, has sold at the Gooding & Co auction in Scottsdale for $5.28 million (£3.2 million).

Even with the arrival of the new McLaren P1, the ultimate supercar is still the McLaren F1.
So the arrival of a McLaren F1 GTR Longtail on the auction block at Gooding & Co’s sale in Scottsdale raised expectations of a possible record-breaking price for the GTR Longtail, with pre-sale estimates putting the price between $5 and $7 million.
Surprisingly, especially as a road-going F1 has recently changed hands for more than $9 million, the GTR Longtail reached an almost disappointing $5.28 million, despite a great history.
That great history for chassis 021R includes wins in FIA GT Championship races in Helsinki and Hockenheim, being predominantly driven by JJ Lehto and Steve Soper, having four podium finishes in five races and being the most successful BMW Team car in private hands.
It may have cost the new owner $5.28 million, but by F1 standards that’s something of a bargain.
