McLaren P1 GTR is McLaren's P1 for the track

The new P1 for the track is to be the McLaren P1 GTR as McLaren revive a moniker last seen on the icon F1 GTR and will be part of a McLaren GTR Programme.

Last week, when McLaren announced it is already in profit after just three years of operation, they also announced a P1 for the track was being built for P1 owners to go racing.

Now, it’s been revealed the track car is to be the McLaren P1 GTR, reviving a badge used with the racing versions of the iconic McLaren F1 and heralding the most extreme McLaren ever.

The P1 GTR will only be made available to owners of the road P1 and production won’t start until P1 road car production ends in the middle of 2015.

But then McLaren will start building the P1 GTR for owners to go racing and it will be extreme in every way with 986 bhp, racing slicks, widened track, what looks like a fixed rear wing and a more aggressive design.

Buying in to the McLaren P1 GTR Programme – which will costs £1.98 million – won’t just buy you a car but entry in to an exclusive track-focused racing club, with owners getting consultations with McLaren’s Frank Stephenson, training from the F1 team’s fitness gurus, access to F1 simulators and dedicated track days at F1 circuits.

It sounds like a lot of fun in store for those who can afford it as McLaren’s version of Ferrari’s FXX programme.
