The Mercedes-AMG GT – Mercedes’ answer to cars like the Porsche 911 and Audi R8 – was revealed in September ahead of a debut at the Paris Motor Show, and now it has gone in sale in the UK from £97,195.
But if you do want to save yourself £13k – and get a bit less power – the GT does offer a very decent level of performance from its 462 hp 4.0 litre Bi-Turbo engine, enough to get to 62mph in 4.0 seconds.
You’ll also get 19″ alloys, a mechanical limited slip diff, a switchable AMG exhaust, COMAND, AMG suspension and an adjustable electronic rear wing, so it’s not exactly a hair shirt AMG GT.
But step up to the AMG GT S (£110,495) and things get more interesting.
For starters, the 4.0 litre B-Turbo gets boosted to 510 hp – enough to get to 62mph in 3.8 seconds – and you’ll also get 20″ alloys, red brake callipers with bigger discs, AMG Ride Control and an electronic rear diff.
But if you don’t mind shelling out a chunk more £122,745) for the GT S Edition 1 you’ll also get a fixed rear wing and deep front splitter, high gloss silver and black alloys (19″ at the front, 20″ at the back), carbon roof, black mirror and window surrounds, black exhaust tips, leather and suede AMG performance seats with red contrast stitching and a Black Diamond textured finish centre console.
Of course, it doesn’t stop there when it comes to spending and there are a range of paint finishes to choose from – including designo ones like AMG Solarbeam yellow – different alloys, 14 leathers, five central console colour combos, different seats and Ceramic Brakes as well as ‘Packs’ like the Premium Package (£4195) which adds reversing camera, panoramic roof and Burmester sound.
It’s a strong, and appealing, offering from Mercedes-AMG and one that could hurt sales of cars like the Porsche 911, Audi R8 and the Jaguar F-Type R.
