Morgan EV3 – Morgan’s Electric 3-Wheeler
The Morgan EV3, Morgan’s electric take on their three-wheeler, will go in to production in 2018 using an electric powertrain from Frazer Nash.
It’s three years since we first learnt that Morgan had plans to take their bonkers little retro three-wheeler, complete with its archaic styling, and turn it in to an electric car.We did say at the time that we couldn’t see it being an easy task turning the tiny, lightweight Morgan three-wheeler in to an EV with all its extra weight and space needed, but Morgan look to have done it with help from Frazer Nash.
Frazer Nash is a name as old as Morgan’s, and they’ve made a return in recent years by buying up Bristol Cars and delivering up the £250k Bristol Bullet with a Cosworth V8, when what we expected was an electric Bristol.
That’s because Frazer Nash is now a British research and engineering firm, specialising in building hybrid and range extenders, so that seemed the likely route.
But instead of a the big Bristol getting an EV Powertrain from Frazer Nash, it’s the little Morgan 3-wheeler getting a new architecture incorporating Frazer Nash’s proven electric technology, including fast charging.
The basics are a 21kWh lithium-ion battery pack and a liquid cooled electric motor powering the single back wheel and delivering speak 56bhp and the promise of 120 mile range.
It doesn’t sound massively impressive, but then the EV3 is nothing more than a weekend toy, and the instant torque in something so small should be a bit of a hoot.
The Morgan EV3 Electric 3-Wheeler goes in to production in the second half of 2018.
