The new 2017 BMW 5-Series has been revealed, with styling cues and technology from the new 7-Series yet looking very familiar. On sale now from £36,025.
Looking remarkably familiar, BMW has still managed to inject the new 5-Series with styling cues from the new 7-Series, such as the lights and grille, grown it all round and, despite that, made it lighter and more frugal.
New 2017 BMW 5-Series gets a 10.25″ infotainment as standard
Already on sale, the starting range of models for the new 5-Series is a trio of petrols – 530i with a 249bhp four-cylinder, 540i with a 335bhp six-cylinder and an M550i with a 456bhp V8 – a trio of diesels – 520d with a 188bhp four-cylinder, 520d ED with the same and a 530d with 262bhp six-cylinder – and a 530e hybrid with 248bhp.
All engine options, apart from the 520d, come with an eight-speed automatic gearbox and all engine options also come with the option of xDrive 4WD, which will be standard on the M550i, which will make them quicker off the mark and more sure-footed, if not quite as frugal or fun.
Standard across the range is a plethora of technology, including BMW’s Professional Media with a 10.25″ screen iDrive, and option stuff includes semi-autonomous tech in the Driving Assistant Plus including lane change, lots of Apps, Remote Control Parking and a built-in SIM for connectivity.
It’s a convincing package, and should allow BMW to take the sector crown as its new 5-Series goes up against the Mercedes E-Class and Jaguar XF, and with the new 5-Series Touring and M5 still to come – as well as further models – it’s going to be a hard act to best.
