New BMW 745e and 745Le xDrive plug-in hybrids – UK price and spec
The new 2019 BMW 745e and 745Le xDrive plug-in hybrids go on sale in the UK in the spring with up to 394bhp and calimed economy of up to 141mpg.
The new 2019 BMW 7 Series arrived just a couple of weeks ago – complete with a big grille which looks like it came from the new BMW X7 – and included the latest plug-in hybrid variants to take on Mercedes S Class. Now BMW has got round to detailing exactly what the new 7 Series plug-ins have to offer, with a choice of two versions – RWD and 4WD – both with the same hybrid powertrain
The hybrid powertrain now gets a proper 3.0 litre six-pot for its ICE bit, good for 286bhp, which is mated to an electric motor good for a further 113bhp. Throw them both in to action with a boot-full in Sport Mode and you’ll have 394bhp to play with, enough to get you to 62mph in 5.2 seconds (5.1 seconds in the 4WD745Le xDrive).
As well as giving the new hybrid 7 Series models more ICE, they’ve also given it a bigger battery (12kWH) for storing juice which means, in Hybrid Mode, you can trolley along at up to 68mph using on battery power and at up to 87mph if you have it in Electric Mode. BMW say you can go up to 36 miles in EV mode, but don’t bet on it on normal roads in the real world.
With two power sources, BMW seems to have gone a bit overboard with driving modes to try and offer something for every occasion, although the chances of picking the right mode at the right time are probably slim.
You have Sport and Adaptive modes to kick things off, as well as Hybrid, Electric and Battery Control to control power use, and even a Hybrid Eco Pro mode if you press the Hybrid button twice, which promises to cut fuel consumption.
The new BMW 7 Series 745e costs from £76,815 and the BMW 745Le xDrive from £83,560. Both go on sale in the UK in the spring.
