New BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe revealed
The new BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe arrives as the final piece of the new 8 Series range, effectively replacing the old 6 Series Gran Coupe.
The new BMW 8 Series is an impressive car, but perhaps not as impressive as BMW would like you to think; perhaps trying a bit too hard to be sporty in a market that really likes luxury. But could the new BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe, revealed today, be the pick of the range? The old BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe certainly was, and this new 8 Series Gran Coupe looks likely to be too.
Yes, it’s just a stretched take on the 8 Series Coupe – it’s 239mm longer and a bit wider and taller – but the stretching hasn’t wrecked the looks. If anything it’s improved them.
It’s also allowed the fitting of proper seats in the back and four doors, seats that fold 40/20/40 so you can stick longer stuff in the 440-litre boot, and it’s perfect for four adults on a long journey. There’s even a small seat in the middle in the back for little uns.
Everything else is pure 8 Series, although the suspension has been tweaked a bit to work with the bigger Gran Coupe, including stiffer springs, Adaptive dampers and active steering (for four-wheel drive).
Engines are straight from the 8 Series Coupe, with a diesel 4WD 840d xDrive Gran Coupe, petrol RWD 840i and V8 M850i Gran Coupe.
Prices start at £69,340 for the 840i, with the 840d from £73,915 and the M850i Gran Coupe starting at £97,720. And expect the M8 Gran Coupe to arrive soon too.
