New Jaguar XE gets John McEnroe as Wimbledon ‘Secret Chauffeur’
John McEnroe – Wimbledon Legend – has been roped in by Jaguar to play ‘Secret Chauffeur’ to two tennis fans as Jaguar raises its XE profile at Wimbledon.
In many ways the greatest grass court tennis player ever, John McEnroe has swapped the grass of Wimbledon for the commentators microphone, where he brings insightful bluntness to proceedings, and now he’s donned another working hat – ‘Secret Chauffeur’ at the wheel of the new Jaguar XE.Jaguar are using this year’s Wimbledon for PR antics – including supplying 170 cars – with a mission to provide feedback on the emotions of Wimbledon using atmospheric sensors and biometric wristbands to gauge just how exciting Wimbledon can be.
But they’ve found a new way to gauge excitement by roping in John McEnroe to act as a ‘Secret Chauffeur’ for a pair of tennis fans heading for SW19, using the biometric wristbands to see just how excited they get when they find out McEnroe is at the wheel (or it could be they’re so excited to be in the Jaguar XE?).
The two fans – Tom Payne and Nick Webb – had won a VIP trip to Wimbledon as part of Jaguar’s #FeelWimbledon campaign and were quite gobsmacked when McEnroe took over chauffeur duties and ferried them to the All England Club.
In the process, Jaguar reckon the surprised pairs’ heartbeat increased dramatically (by 63 per cent) when they realised Mac was at the wheel, and continued to rise as they chatted to their new chauffeur.
McEnroe said:
I was very happy to be part of this creative stunt with Jaguar. This is the greatest Grand Slam of them all – both in the eyes of the players and fans – and the surprise on Tom and Nick’s faces when I got in the car shows just how excited the fans get at Wimbledon.
We don’t think Jaguar can claim the stunt as a controlled scientific study, but it did get the new Jaguar XE front and centre, and McEnroe’s face in the picture too.
Job done.
