The 2017 Kia Rio goes on sale in the UK, costing from £11,995 for the Rio 1 1.25, rising to £17,445 for the Rio First Edition 1.0 T-GDi.
Kia say the new Rio, sold only as a five-door, offers more space, better economy, new engines, great connectivity and a ‘more mature’ driving experience.
There are 10 versions of the new Rio in five trim grades – 1, 2 and 3 – as well as a limited-run First Edition model sitting at the top of the range.
Specs seem to be pretty good, with the entry-level grade 1 getting Air Con, electric front windows, keyless locking, electric door mirrors, Bluetooth, auto lights and LED running lights. Safety stuff includes Electronic Stability Control, Hill Start Assist and Vehicle Stability Management.
The Rio’s grade 2 trim adds 15″ alloys, leather steering wheel and gearknob, rear electric windows, electric folding mirrors, DAB, LED indicators, parking sensors, reversing camera, Cruise, Emergency Braking and Lane Departure Warning.
Grade 3 – costing from £16,295 – gets 16″ alloys, Climate, (fake) leather, 7″ display screen, heated front seats and steering wheel, auto wipers, privacy glass, Sat Nav, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
Normally, and at some point to come, the Rio 3 would be the top of the tree, but Kia has jumped on the First Edition bandwagon with a big spec Rio First Edition, costing £17,445, adding 17″ alloys, smart key entry and start, stainless steel pedals, (fake) black and red leather and LED rear lights.
Kia’s 1.0 T-GDI engines arrive on the Rio with 99 bhp or 118 bhp, joining the 1.4 litre diesel with 76 bhp or 89bhp, 1.25 litre petrol with 83bhp and 1.4 litre petrol with 98 bhp.
A manual gearbox (five-speed or six-speed depending on model) is standard, although you can have a four-speed auto with the 1.4 litre petrol (don’t bother).
The 2017 Kia Rio is on sale at Kia’s UK dealers from today (30 January 2017).
