New SMART ForTwo & SMART ForFour price & specs – costs from £11,125

The new SMART ForTwo & SMART ForFour – revealed in the summer – will cost from £11,125 when it arrives in the UK in early 2015 with a choice of three spec levels.

The SMART ForTwo (and it’s big(-ger) brother SMART ForFour) are real ‘Marmite’ cars; you tend to love them or hate them.

Mercedes think that the latest SMART ForTwo and ForFour – revealed in the summer – are going to find more buyers than before (or they certainly hope so), although they have hedged their bets by spreading the load with Renault and the new Twingo, which is basically the same under the skin.

Despite never being a runaway success (or probably even profitable) the SMART formula is much the same as before, with a FourTwo that looks like someone ran away with the back end and a FourFour that looks like it got it back but wasn’t quite sure what to do with it.

Prices are also still the wrong side of sensible, with the entry-level ForTwo costing £11,125 (although the ForFour is a relative bargain at a starting point just £495 more). Pricy the new SMARTs may be, but they do get decent spec levels.

The entry-level Passion trim comes with 15″ alloys, Cruise, Climate, Bluetooth and a choice of orange and black or white and black interior.

Jump up a notch to Prime spec (an extra £695) and you can add in stuff like a panoramic glass roof, leather seats, heated seats and lane keep assist, whilst the Proxy spec comes in with much the same kit as the Prime (and the same price) but is the ‘Sporty’ SMART with 16″ alloys, Sports Package (which includes lower suspension and sports pedals) and a blue and white Artico and cloth interior.

Engine choice is either the 70bhp naturally aspirated three-pot or the 89bhp turbo version (which, daftly, isn’t available on the ForFour), with either a 5-speed manual box or a six-speed dual-clutch auto for an extra £995.

There’s also a wide range of custom bits to get buyers to spend even more such as Premium and Premium Plus Packages (with media, SatNav, Auto Lights etc from £795-1295) and there is also (as has become the norm for Mercedes) A SMART Edition 1 available from £13,720.

The new ForTwo & ForFour will arrive in the UK in early 2015.
