The new Volvo XC40 (pictured as a concept) and the all-new XC60 will debut this year (2017).
Volvo has confirmed that the new XC40 and the all-new replacement for the XC60 will both arrive in 2017 to give Volvo an all new SUV lineup.
But now we know for sure that the Volvo XC40 and the new Volvo XC60 will arrive this year, because Volvo boss Hakan Samuelsson has said so.
Speaking to Reuters as Volvo announce a 66% jump in earnings for 2016 – on sales of 534,332 and margins of 6.1% – Samuelsson said he sees 2017 as being another record year for Volvo, with profitability at a very strong level as new models arrive.
Samuelsson went on to say:
This year will be a year with heavy industrial transformation.
Two new cars will come out and at the end of the year we will, for the first time, have an all-modern line-up of SUVs.
The only two SUVs that can be are the new XC40 and the all-new XC60.
The Chinese press are already reporting that the new Volvo XC40 will arrive at the Shanghai Motor Show in April, and that probably means the all new Volvo XC60 arriving either at the Geneva Motor Show next month or at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.
Expecting the all-new XC60 at Geneva is probably too close to the XC40’s arrival in Shanghai, so Frankfurt looks favourite. But with the current XC60 still the best selling SUV in its sector it would be unthinkable for Volvo not to reveal the new model in Europe.
With the same platform as the XC90 underpinning the new XC60, and the XC40 using Volvo’s new compact platform, and with the current 2.0 litre engines as well as very promising units like the T5 Twin Engine three-pot on the way, both the XC40 and XC60 hold a lot of promise.
We already know the current Volvo XC90 is a truly stunning car with a perfect blend of ingredients, and if Volvo manage to make the XC40 and new XC60 as appealing, their target of 800,000 sales a year by 2020 will be a walk in the park.
