Toyota Aygo gets new engine technology to make it more economical

The Toyota Aygo, Toyota’s city car shared with Peugeot and Citroen, is getting new engine technology to reduce fuel consumption by almost 30 per cent.

The new Toyota Aygo has only just arrived as Toyota’s part of the city car triumvirate which includes the new Citroen C1 and new Peugeot 108, but its already set to get improvements.

Toyota have been playing with the little 1.0 litre three-cylinder that lurks under the bonnet of the majority of Aygos, and have managed to do some serious tweaking.

The tweaks include a higher compression ratio of 11.5:1, a cooled exhaust gas recirculation system, changes to the timing, better combustion, less friction and lower weight.

The upshot of all the tweaking is a thermal efficiency of 37 per cent and an improvement in economy and emissions of almost 30 per cent.

That means owners of the Aygo with the new 1.0 litre engine can look forward to official economy of 68.8mph and emissions of just 95g/km.

But it’s not just the 1.0 litre 3-pot that’s changed as Toyota are also introducing an Atkinson Cycle (the same as Toyota’s hybrid cars get) version of the 1.3 litre petrol in to the Aygo, which won’t do anything for performance but should make it more economical.

The new 1.0 litre 3-cylinder engine will be available in the new Aygo from summer 2014, and Toyota plan to offer 14 new engine versions across their range based on these engines by 2015.
