The Toyota Yaris Hybrid-R is a Toyota hybrid concept like no other from Toyota so far, and we’ve had it teased and revealed in a sketch ahead of a debut at Frankfurt next week. But now we get all the details.
There’s also a third electric motor – located between the engine and six-speed sequential ‘box – which is used as a generator to power the super-capacitor and manage the electric motors on the back axle, and torque is distributed between the rear motors to improve traction and handling.
There’s a good chance Toyota could go racing with the Hybrid-R at some point as the 4-cylinder engine has been developed by Toyota Motorsport according to international sporting regulations.
But it’s highly unlikely that the powertrain in the Yaris Hybrid-R will find its way in to a road car, but the fact Toyota are looking at real performance from their HSD setup is appealing.
The Toyota Yaris Hybrid-R will be on show at the Frankfurt Motor Show next week.
