The 400bhp Toyota Yaris Hybrid-R has been revealed and Toyota has announced its 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show will be all hybrid and fuel cell cars.

The 400bhp Toyota Yaris Hybrid-R (pictured) will be at Frankfurt
Last week we had the first hint of a new hybrid concept from Toyota – the Yaris Hybrid-R – which promised 400bhp and a reveal at Frankfurt.
Powered by a 1.6 litre GRE (Global Race Engine), the Yaris-R also gets a pair of powerful electric motors driving the back wheels – turning this Yaris in to a 4WD car, as we suspected – and uses energy recovered under braking and stored in a super capacitor to supplement its power.
What is just as interesting is that Toyota are calling the Yaris-R a showcase for possible future cars that can “…deliver greater performance and driver reward”. Amen to that.
The Yaris-R will be on show at Frankfurt next month as Toyota turn their stand in to a homage to alternate power – past, present and future – with Toyota’s Fuel Cell Hybrid Vehicle (FCHV) technology on show ahead of a launch in 2015 and a focus on 16 years of Toyota Hybrid Technology and details of new or revised hybrid models due by 2015.
And if Toyota are intent on using hybrid technology to improve performance and driver enjoyment, we’re all for it. Just as long as they don’t put CVT boxes in to the performance hybrids.
