Mercedes’ vision of a high-riding Maybach arrives officially in Beijing as the Vision Mercedes-Maybach Ultimate Luxury Concept after it was revealed early thanks to a Mercedes error.
Last week we revealed the Vision Mercedes-Maybach Ultimate Luxury concept after Mercedes dropped a bit of a clanger, published the details on their website and then took them down. But by the time they did that the page had been cached and was there to view. So you already know what’s on offer.
What is on offer is a rather odd melding of a big SUV and a big luxury saloon – complete with notch boot – which rides high and has been designed with the Chinese market firmly in mind, a market which still loves a big saloon car but is growing fonder of SUVs all the time.
It also features Maybach’s rather brash take on luxury , with a very ‘in yer face’ grille and an interior which is meant to be opulent but does look rather OTT with its two white leather thrones in the back, and even a tea set in the rear centre console.
Up front there are a pair of 12.3″ screens in front of the driver and stretching through the middle of the dashboard, rose gold trim, blue ambient lighting and an interface you can have a conversation with and which will sort out your route – and your diary – for you.
There’s a nod to the SUV bit of the design with black cladding on the sills and wheelarches for added butch, there’s a split screen rear window and a set of thumping great alloys. It’s not subtle.
Under the skin is an electric powertrain with 750PS (740bhp) from its four electric motors powered by an 80kWh battery pack good for a couple of hundred miles range and able to recharge with around 60 miles of range in just five minutes.
