The Volkswagen T-Roc – VW’s new Golf-sized SUV – has only just been revealed, but VW are already tripling production plans to cope with demand.
The production version of the Volkswagen T-Roc was revealed a few weeks ago – and got its public debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show this weeks – but it looks like it’s going to be a proper success for VW.Volkswagen has been pretty slow to the SUV game, with only the Touareg and Tiguan on offer until now, and coupled with the fallout from the Dieselgate crisis it’s left VW very vulnerable to competition.
But the T-Roc does look to be a very credible addition to the market, and it’s taking aim at real market stalwarts like the Nissan Qashqai to try and win a significant market share. And it’s off to a good start.
Speaking to Car Advice, VW’s Sales and Marketing boss, Jürgen Stackmann, has revealed that T-Roc production (it’s being built in Portugal alongside the Sharan and Alhambra) was originally scheduled to be around 70,000 a year but initial demand has made VW re-thing production levels.
Now, before the T-Roc production even starts, plans have been changed and VW will be building 200,000 T-Rocs a year in Portugal.
It’s a significant jump, and it’s clear the T-Roc has already garnered a huge amount of interest with its funkier design, range of engines, options of 4WD and, despite all its problems, VW’s reputation for delivering well bolted together cars.
